Raised cholesterol or hypercholesterolemia is a condition where the levels of cholesterol are raised.
There can be many causes of this such genetic predisposition, poor lifestyle and eating habits are the most common. Often with effective weight loss and nutrition intervention the condition is improved or levels may return within the normal range. Stress management and weight loss are crucial to the successful management of the condition. If the hypercholesterolemia is associated with other conditions in the individual e.g. Heart disease, renal disorders, familial hypercholesterolemia or are very raised, medication to control the blood cholesterol levels may be prescribed by your physician or general practitioner.
When the levels of cholesterol become raised they may start to deposit layers in the blood vessels, called plaque. If a piece of plaque should break off and enter the blood stream it may cause a myocardial infarction or stroke. Thus it is important that cholesterol levels be monitored and controlled.
